ChildsPlay was approached in 2019 by the London Borough of Lambeth to provide a playground surfacing solution capable of withstanding heavy footfall in the busy play area within Jubilee Gardens, originally created to commemorate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. The brief was to deliver a durable, safe and visually appealing surface that could perform in one of London’s most high-profile public spaces.
Located on the South Bank, with the iconic London Eye as its backdrop and the Palace of Westminster just a short distance away, the playground at Jubilee Gardens is a vibrant destination for both local families and international visitors. Featuring trim trails, swings and slides, the space provides a valuable recreational area in the heart of the city.
Following an assessment of the existing surface, repairs were carried out where required before approved contractors installed the ChildsPlay impact-absorbing system as an overlay. This approach allowed for a fast and efficient installation, minimising disruption while significantly improving safety and durability.
The finished playground surfacing delivers a clean, attractive and hard-wearing solution, designed to cope with constant use throughout the year. It provides a safe environment for children to play, while maintaining a high-quality appearance in a prominent public setting.
Libby, a tourist from Northern California, said: “One of the best, most interesting playgrounds I’ve seen. All the kids there seemed to be having a great time, and it was a life-saver for us needing to have a break from sightseeing and allow the children to run off steam.”
The project demonstrates how ChildsPlay can successfully enhance playgrounds in demanding, high-traffic environments.
